Lionel Messi Likely Played His Final Competitive Match for Argentina on Home Soil
Lionel Messi may have played his final competitive match for Argentina on home soil, as the national team hosted Venezuela in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier early Friday morning.
Argentina secured a 3-0 victory, with Messi scoring twice — in the 39th and 80th minutes — and Lautaro Martínez adding another in the 76th minute.
This match could mark the last time the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner represents his country in a competitive fixture on Argentine soil. Argentina currently has no scheduled home competitive matches in the near future, aside from potential friendlies.
Following the match, Messi hinted at the possibility that this was indeed his final competitive appearance in front of home fans. In a press conference, he expressed deep emotion and gratitude for the moment.
“Many things have happened, but to finish like this here is something I always dreamed of. To celebrate with my people... Over the years, I received a lot of love in Barcelona, but my dream was to experience that here, in my country, with my people. For many years, things were said, but now I’m leaving with all the beautiful things we’ve achieved,” Messi said.
The 37-year-old also cast doubt on his participation in the 2026 World Cup, citing his age and the natural progression of his career.
“As I’ve said before regarding the World Cup — I don’t think I’ll play in another one because of my age. It’s very likely I won’t. But I’m happy and excited about what’s to come. As I always say, I go day by day, game by game,” he added.
Argentina has already qualified for the 2026 World Cup, and Messi’s two goals in the match brought his international tally to 114, further cementing his legendary status.
